This year's Tour de France begins in London. In the past, closed road events have caused a lot of controversy in the UK and this year will probably be no different. The police will have invaluable help and expertise from the ‘motards’ of France – the gendarme motorcycle out-riders who always ensure of the racer's safety on French roads.

From the UK, the race moves to the port of Dunkerque and the hardest cycle race in the world will be well and truly underway. Unless you are following the event, visiting drivers are best advised to avoid the areas listed below. If the race route is unavoidable, please remember that cycle racing is a popular sport in France and riders are always treated with respect and tolerance.
