François II 1544 - 1559.

King of France 1559 - 1560. Eldest son of Henri II and Catherine de Medicis.

He was born at Fontainebleau and married Mary Stuart who later became Queen Mary of Scotland or Mary Queen of Scots and was beheaded by Elizabeth Ist of England.

Her uncles, Francis duc de Guise and the Cardinal of Lorraine, held the reins of government, because François was of a feeble constitution and did not live long. It is ironic that Catherine de Medicis, herself of robust health, should have three sons who all died young. By contrast, her daughter, Marguerite de Valois, lived to the age of 62, a remarkably long life for anyone at that time in history.
