Jean II 1319 - 1364.
King of France 1350 - 1364. Known as The Good. His fourteen-year reign was marked by his ineptitude and his misfortunes. 1356 saw him defeated at the battle of Poitiers by the Edward Prince of Wales (The Black Prince) and taken prisoner. He was held first at Bordeaux and then transferred to London and only returned to France when a large ransom had been paid. On hearing that his son, the Duke of Anjou, had escaped after being held hostage, he returned to England where he died in 1364. During his enforced stay in England his son Charles acted as regent.
